Throughout this module, I have been taught how to approach challenging problems in a more adaptive way. The module introduced the idea that problems can be split into two dimensions: technical and adaptive. Technical problems can be solved with existing knowledge and expertise, while adaptive problems require new knowledge and capabilities that come from those experiencing the problem.
In addition to this, I have gained an understanding of the differences between authority and leadership and when to use each one effectively. The module provided practical steps to put these concepts into action, which I have found to be useful. Overall, I feel that I now have a better grasp on how to approach and solve problems in a more adaptive and effective manner.
** If there is an Adaptive issue, the leader should not try to solve this problem alone. This leads to micromanagement and is the downfall of many leaders
** Sometimes leading can mean disappointing people at a rate they can absorb
** Generate capacity, not dependancy
** When trying to affect change, identify and recruit strong people who can move things in the building or influence other teachers
To make a distinction between Technical and Adaptive Challenges:
Ask: Does making progress on this problem require changes in people's values, attitudes, habits, or behaviours
No -> Can apply an expert solution (technical)
Yes -> Must lead an adaptive process
Affecting Change in Schools in Crisis
Where to begin: Assessing adaptive capacity to identify existing capabilities. Helps build on areas where capacity needs to be developed.
Questions for Measuring Capacity
Is there appropriate times/places for difficult school questions/discussions?
Does leadership act for the betterment of the school vs personal interests?
Is failure viewed as a learning opportunity?
Are teachers encouraged to help each other innovate?
Do teachers genuinely enjoy each other and collaborate easily?
Does the team change their approaches to meet student needs?
Is there scheduled collaboration time to reflect of teaching practices?
Affecting Change in Schools Who are Already Successful
** You have to pay attention to the perception of the people in the building. Understand where they are and ask them questions to find out what is going well, and more importantly, where there could be some improvement.
** The change you should bring to an already successful school needs to be what people are receptive to. By listening to what they need and want, you can plan to move the school forward.
